KNEC Begins Training of KJSEA Examiners Ahead of October Grade 9 Assessment

Uncategorized

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has begun inviting teachers shortlisted for the August training of KJSEA examiners, with successful applicants receiving text messages directing them to report for residential training sessions.

One such message reads:

“You have been identified to participate in the training of KJSEA examiners. You are therefore requested to report to Murang’a TTC on 3rd August 2025 between 2pm and 6.00pm. The training is strictly residential. Please carry your personal effects and a passport size photo to be affixed to your identification tag. You are also notified that the exercise will run to 12th August 2025. Please confirm your availability by sending an email to: pmutiso@knec.ac.ke by 2nd August 2025.”

The training fee is KSh 10,500, payable only by shortlisted applicants through official KNEC channels.

Hybrid Training Model

KNEC announced that the August training will be conducted partially online before transitioning to face-to-face sessions in residential venues across selected training centres. The model mirrors the April pilot programme, where teachers first underwent an online orientation before reporting physically to designated institutions.

In April, subject-based training centres included:

  • Machakos Girls – Kiswahili

  • Maryhill Girls – English

  • Murang’a TTC – Business Studies

  • Kilimambogo TTC – Agriculture

  • St. Francis Girls Mang’u – Mathematics

  • Sunshine Secondary School – Geography, History

  • Machakos TTC – CRE

  • St. George’s Secondary School – Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Preparing for First KJSEA

The training is part of preparations for the inaugural Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), which will be administered to Grade 9 learners between 27th October and 3rd November 2025, with rehearsals set for 24th October.

Nearly two million candidates have registered for the assessment, which will cover 12 examinable papers, including English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Agriculture, CRE, IRE, Creative Arts & Sports, and Pre-technical Studies.

Eligibility Criteria

KNEC has outlined strict requirements for examiner trainees. Applicants must:

  • Be practicing teachers in the relevant learning areas.

  • Hold at least a Diploma in Education.

  • Have a minimum of three years’ teaching experience.

  • Be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) or Public Service Commission.

  • Be 50 years or below, with a clean disciplinary record.

  • Be recommended by their head of institution.

Tutors from teacher training colleges and TVET institutions are also encouraged to apply for technical and vocational subjects.

Application Process

Interested teachers were required to apply through the KNEC Examiners’ Portal (https://examinersapp.knec.ac.ke). Only those who completed their profiles and uploaded required documents were shortlisted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Qualified examiners will later be contracted to mark the KJSEA papers in October, using KNEC’s structured marking criteria.
