Kenyan Teachers Demand Change: Better Healthcare, Job Mobility, and Career Progression

Reinstate med allowance

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has failed to provide group insurance for teachers, prompting calls for immediate action and the reinstatement of medical allowances .  This isn't simply a hashtag campaign #ReinstateMedicalAllowance but a demand for greater dignity, choice, and fairness in healthcare access .  Teachers want the autonomy to choose their own health insurance providers from numerous private insurers, such as; Jubilee, CIC, Britam, AAR, and Madison .  The core issue is the restoration of medical allowances to empower teachers to make informed decisions about their healthcare.
Kenyan teachers express deep dissatisfaction with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), citing a lack of adequate representation and responsiveness to their concerns.  Their demands include streamlining their medical coverage to a single, more accessible plan instead of the current dual system , simplifying their retirement schemes to a single option , implementing a more equitable transfer policy to allow for greater job mobility , and addressing stagnant career progression where a teacher remains in one job group for more than 20 years .  Ultimately, they call for either improved service provision from the TSC or its dissolution and integration into the Ministry of Education.
